Expert Reviews & Buying Guides for Coffee Enthusiasts
An espresso cup and saucer set is a matched collection of small, thick-walled cups, usually holding 50-100ml, with saucers that catch drips and park the spoon. It exists to protect heat and crema, the two things a short, concentrated shot loses fastest. You’ve dialled in the grind, bought a decent machine and weighed the beans … Read more
Buying an espresso cup gift set sounds simple until you’re stood in front of a screen full of near-identical white porcelain sets, all claiming to be “perfect for coffee lovers,” all suspiciously similar in size, and none of them telling you why one is worth twice the price of another. It’s a small gift with … Read more
There’s a particular kind of heartbreak reserved for coffee lovers: you pull a perfect shot, admire the crema, then burn your fingertips the second you pick up the cup. Double walled espresso cups exist to solve exactly that problem, and once you’ve used one, going back to a thin ceramic demitasse feels a bit like … Read more
Here’s an odd little truth nobody tells you when you buy an espresso machine: the cup does roughly a third of the work. You can dial in the grind, tamp like a competition barista, and still watch a gorgeous shot go lukewarm and flat in ninety seconds flat because you served it in the wrong … Read more
Somewhere between your grinder and your portafilter sits a decision that quietly wrecks more shots than a dodgy tamp ever could: clumpy, unevenly distributed grounds. A WDT tool is a small handle fitted with several very fine needles, used to stir ground coffee inside a portafilter basket before tamping, breaking up clumps and evening out the density of the coffee bed so water extracts through it uniformly. If you’ve ever pulled a shot that gushed out one side of a … Read more
Somewhere between “just tamp it and hope” and full barista-competition puck prep lies a genuinely useful rabbit hole: the distribution tool vs WDT tool espresso debate. If you’ve recently upgraded your home setup with a decent grinder and a naked portafilter, you’ve probably already seen the problem the moment you pulled a shot — a … Read more
If you’ve ever pulled a shot that ran out sour on one side and bitter on the other, the culprit almost certainly wasn’t your beans. It was channelling — water finding the laziest route through an unevenly packed coffee puck, over-extracting one patch while barely touching the rest. An espresso distribution tool exists purely to … Read more
A small knock box for espresso is a compact bin, usually stainless steel, aluminium or ABS plastic, designed to catch used coffee pucks when you strike your portafilter against its internal bar — built with a slimmer footprint than standard knock boxes so it can live on a small worktop or tuck under the drip … Read more
